Sprint Skiff Review - What Does This iPad Competitor Have to Offer?

Designed to compete with the Apple iPhone/iPod/iTunes, iLove to dominate the market monopoly, the Skiff was a hit back at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. Release dates were expected in February, but so far, eager consumers still don't have their hands on one.

Skiff, LLC is owned by magazine publisher giant Hearst. They created a full-color, large-format multi-tasking gadget that includes wireless capabilities. The Skiff joins Sprint's network of products. Consumers will have exclusive access to the Skiff store and advertisements specific to Skiff.

Although it is a competitor, it won't blow out the Kindle fire, as the gadget is geared toward magazines and newspapers. It's no wonder being that it is owned by Hearst. The publishes giant puts out newspapers such as the Houston Chronicle, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Connecticut Post and San Francisco Chronicle. Users will also have access to popular Hearst magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Redbook, O and Esquire.

What is does offer is that it is the first to feature metal foil e-paper technology. Not only does this offer durability, flexibility, but it is the next generation of e-paper display which is based on a thin sheet of foil. The old glass display is finally replaced. It is over a quarter-inch in height, and the thinnest ereader to date; however, that may change tomorrow. It weighs in at over a pound, and it holds a charge for over a week with common use.

The Skiff utilizes Sprint's 3G Wireless Network to deliver subscription newspapers, magazines and of course e-books. It also has WiFi. Fully intuitive, the user can navigate easily through Skiff store materials, in addition to personal and work documents.

While it may be awkward for book reading, but the huge 11.5 inch screen is perfect for newspaper reading. The touch screen is easy to use with taps and swipes, and the refresh rate is comparable to ereaders on the market now. It uses e-ink technology, but competes with other e-readers. A bit elementary, but satisfactory, it can handle 12fps animation. In comparison to LCD it's perfect for small ads.

The Kindle and Nook came onto the market with well established bookstores as their back bone. Skiff users may find a problem with a non-existent store, but it's still not out yet, so this is actually might not even be a concern.

In addition to the grayscale product, Las Vegas show consumers got to handle the color prototype. The device is still in its infancy, but it was noted that minimal pixilation was present and it was clear, but not as sharp as an LCD. The release date and price for the color version is unknown, but really where is the grayscale Skiff? The ereader party is eagerly awaiting its new guest.

How to Get the Best Out of Your Facebook

Hey have you ever wondered how some user have all the attention in Facebook and have so many followers or friends!! Well there is a no great secret as to why just basic planning and using Facebook to its full potential to attract friends or fans, also some have pages for attracting fans. In this article I will attempt to point out and show you the ways to attract friends and or find friends to build your friend list up and also ways to do this either by pure attraction or you going out there and finding and offering your service page to that friend for example--Multi Level network Marketing and then requesting them to join you because of his product or profile and his nice page promoting his service and why they should join you the benefits of it.

Well first let's cover the basics of Facebook. Well we all know how to join, it's advised to write a name that is either what your business is or what you are promoting or just simply your name, your name is good for getting yourself branded as we also want people to know us and not that we are a robot just sending out spam!! Then the next thing is to get your profile up and running in this you should put a little bit about yourself and what your hoobies are, pastime and then why you are in the business you are in, hen what you are doing at the moment not advertisements or selling anything just about what you are working on at the time or career path eg Network Marketer.

After completing a good profile you then can add little extras on the left hand side e.g. your links to your what you are promoting could either be from an external source or on Facebook itself via page that you may have setup already or someone else's as an affiliate, and displayed on the side making sure they are displayed when a friend comes in to read what your about and what you are doing. You'll now need to find some friends the most easiest way to find friends is thru your emails you have in your accounts for example Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo any of those will import into Facebook then will check who has an account here in Facebook and then give you the option to join them, the best way is to be polite you could say "as I noticed you have a Facebook account is it ok that I connect here also as is a better way to send messages and stay in contact than just plain emails" is one way to request to be friends or you can just plainly add contacts without a message, but with a message you will probably have a better chance of being confirmed as a friend.

Once you have checked all your email accounts and searched to see if they are already on Facebook you can now go through and find the uses in the same field as you are, for example if you are into "MLM Multilevel Network Marketing" then you would maybe search for other groups or users in the same field MLM Marketing and then click on the friends they have already and request as before to be there friend also one by one, I think in any one day a person can request up to a maximum of 30 new friends after that they have blocking system it first gives you warning if you see this stop finding friends immediately and wait a while either till the next day or least 5 or 6 hours, as we don't won't someone going and getting themselves into trouble and being suspended!!! With this system if you can then get a confirmation off the friend confirming your request then you will have another friend in your list, do that every day for a month you will have a few friends by then not all will confirm your request but most. So let's say you get 30 requests and 22 confirm that's not too bad so will take you 5 days to get 100 friends so after a month you will have like 500-600 friends. Slow going but is the only way at the moment except through attraction marketing which is another topic for discussion.

So to conclude hopefully we have our list growing by the day and a great attractable profile for the new potential friends to see and we now have our business idea started, because a lot of the time you will also get other friends of friends wanting to add you as well and that will be a bonus ok. Keep finding new friends and before you know it your list will be at a decent size and you will start to attract friends to you also.

Well will speak soon and enjoy using Facebook keep on discovering and trying out new things there.

Free Mail, Free Storage and Free Security - A Look at What Windows Live Has to Offer

Microsoft, in its most staid tradition, is always coming up with something new to try and improve the computer and online experiences. The proprietary online service suite of Microsoft, Windows Live, is full of improved and totally new features to improve user experience and bring more computer users totally online in their software usage.

Hotmail Microsoft's email program, Hotmail, has been around since the earliest days of free email for the public. In the fifteen years or so since its inception, Hotmail has only improved - and it was more than decent to start with. The latest version of Hotmail has a simple interface and includes built-in security features to fight spam and to block viruses and scams. When you sign up with a Hotmail account, you'll have 5 gigabytes of storage to start, and that number can grow if you need it to. MSN messenger, another service offered by Microsoft, is linked through Hotmail so you can easily communicate with your email contacts through chat.

Also included with the email program are shared calendars. You can easily set up a calendar for your family, your study group or your special group of friends and easily update them for everyone to see. You can also subscribe to the calendars of your favorite teams or organizations to be sure you never miss a game or meeting. The calendars can be used while you're online or off thanks to the Windows Live Mail desktop application. Hotmail also lets you consolidate all of your email accounts in a central location - including accounts that aren't Hotmail accounts. Organize and sort through all of your emails simultaneously.

MSN Messenger MSN Messenger lets you stay connected with friends, family and colleagues from any computer. When you download MSN Messenger, you have access to more than just a chat program. Through Messenger you can organize your contacts and arrange them into groups to chat with more than one person at a time. Not only can you send messages through Messenger, you can also send files and post photos on Windows Live. When you post new photos, your friends and contacts are alerted to the change and can view your new photos easily.

Microsoft gives you the option to customize your chat experience by personalizing the background scenes, avatars and sounds of Messenger. You can even take Messenger on the road using Windows Live Hotmail or by using Messenger on your mobile phone. Staying connected is simple and easy - even if you're almost never home.

SkyDrive - There's no need to frantically save documents on flash drives to take in for presentations or to try to work from different locations on different days. Nor do you need to port around your own laptop to keep your work close by. You can use any computer to access your files if you store them in Windows Live SkyDrive. SkyDrive allows you to store 25 gigabytes worth of files and folders online where you can keep them safe or share them with friends or the world. By setting a folder to public or shared in your SkyDrive, you easily make files in those folders available to others - an excellent way to work on a project simultaneously or to promote your ideas and thoughts on a particular topic.

SkyDrive contains 25 free gigabytes of storage space that includes a password-protected login. The files and folders can be substantial, and they are completely in your control for backup, sharing or publishing your work. SkyDrive works on any computer with internet connection, and it works on mobile devices as well making it far simpler to use than even the smallest pin drive. Accessing SkyDrive is as simple. When you're ready to save files in the SkyDrive, simply drag and drop them into the open window and you'll be able to access them from anywhere. Each folder in the SkyDrive has its own URL as well to make accessing the right folder simple for you and for anyone with your permission to enter.

Microsoft Security Essentials Need protection? Windows Live offers you free protection against spyware, pop-ups and slow performance with its Security Essentials. Security Essentials is free software provided for download by Microsoft. With Essentials, you can block, find and eliminate spyware and programs you don't want on your computer. Once eliminated, you can even get programs back if you realize you've deleted the wrong one, making the detection and removal of problems reasonably fool-proof.

To keep Security Essentials up-to-date and current in fighting all of the latest threats, dedicated researchers from Microsoft scour the internet in search of potential threats. In addition to this, volunteers from the huge network of Essentials users (the MS Live "Cloud") flag programs that are suspicious as well. You can elect to download updates for Essentials that counteract the newest threats as they are detected, but before they hit your machine, keeping you safe and your computer operating at peak performance.

Microsoft Office Live Ready for an online version of Microsoft Office? It's already there. Microsoft Office Live has a virtual workspace in beta form that will let you store up to 5 gigabytes of files online to keep private or to share. Most impressively, you can work with any of your favorite Office programs including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Create files online through Office Live and store the completed files virtually. When you're ready to use or continue working on the file, simply open the virtually stored file in the right application on your desktop and you'll be up and running without any complicated conversions.

Microsoft currently offers a wide range of extras through Windows Live, and Microsoft continues to update and create new products to make working and playing online simpler. The enhanced communication tools and online applications make your personal and professional life much simpler. And like all Microsoft products, soon you'll wonder how you ever lived without them.

A Letter to Americans: Is Freedom Slipping Away?

My Fellow Americans:

The United States is not a democracy, it's a republic. Say the Pledge of Allegiance to yourself. What does it say?

A republic has representative government. A democracy is governed directly by the people. The closest thing to a democracy is California where the people put proclamations on the ballet and let the public decide what is right, not the legislature.

Be that as it may, our republic had faired well on the average over the years, but the President or the Congress sometimes takes over and rules with a mighty hand. Still, many American People feel that their Constitutional Rights are being infringed upon. Some think that the government verges on dictatorship.

The Presidential Oath of Office

Here is the Presidential Oath: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

The Presidential Oath is usually given by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Because of the sad circumstances, the oath was given to LBJ on Air Force I at Love Field, Dallas, Texas by Sarah T. Hughes, U.S. District Judge, Northern District of Texas.

The Congressional Oath of Office

Here is the Congressional Oath of Office: I, (name of Member), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

These oaths require that the President and the Congress uphold constitutional law. The constitution can be modified by amendment. Three-fourths of the states must ratify an amendment to change the constitution. Seven years is the allowed time period. (To see a list of amendments that have not been ratified go to: http://www.house.gov/house/Amendnotrat.shtml.)

No where in the oath does it say that the President or a Congressman must be honest in all of his dealings. We need to add that, don't we?

How Presidents See Themselves

How the President will fulfill his duties somewhat depends on how the President sees himself. President Bush sees himself as Commander in Chief. Woodrow Wilson saw himself as World Statesman. FDR before World War II saw himself as Friend of the Down and Out. As war loomed on the horizon he saw himself as Defender of Freedom.

Well, I made this up. How do you think the presidents thought of themselves?

How the American People See Presidents

The American people have always responded to how the President thinks. Some think that President Bush is a dictator. Some thought that President Wilson was giving our freedoms away to world government. Some thought that President Roosevelt should have let the starving American people fend for themselves and that he was a warmonger.

Presidential Perspective

Most presidents view themselves in history. They need something for their Presidential Library. Most have had a good grasp on history and precedent. President Bush is an exception. He is not an intellectual. That does not disqualify him from the presidency. The people "spoke" twice.

Despite what Harriet Miers said about the President, he is not Mr. Swift. But as he serves in the Presidency, he is getting smarter all the time. But don't expect "former" President Bush to be a genius. He'll be back driving his tractor and chopping wood on his ranch. Future presidents will ask him to drop by for an informative chat.

My Last Gripe on Harriet Miers and Tyrannosaurus Rex

Harriet Miers would have been a better selection to the Supreme Court than Samuel Alito, Jr. She has much broader experience and she has compassion.

Miers received her bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1967 and JD in 1970 from Southern Methodist University. Upon graduation, she clerked for U.S. District Judge Joe E. Estes from 1970 to 1972. (See her amazing biography at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/03/AR2005100300305.html.)

She was raped of her intellectual virtues, and her chance to serve, by a hasty, unthinking, belligerent Congress.

Orrin Hatch, who was a member of our church in Pittsburgh, gave her a loving hug after the beating.

God Bless You, Orrin.

The Terrorist Attack on the World Trade Center

The attack on September 11, 2001 on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City demanded action by the President. He felt this to be his personal responsibility to the people of the United States. He took action accordingly on a global basis and a domestic basis.

He didn't particularly spend his time ironing out the facts or studying his constitutional rights. His objective has always been to stop the terrorist, never to negotiate with them, and to kill them dead in their tracks. He has focused on the terrorist, not the American People.

He is acting as Commander in Chief.

Historians will treat him kindly on this matter.

The problem comes when the President changes emphasis. Why was the attack on Iraq to destroy "Weapons of Mass Destruction," changed to an attack to "Remove a Vicious Regime," and then to an attack to "Bring Freedom to Iraq?"

I think if we had started with Number 2, to "Remove a Vicious Regime," we would have been ahead. Maybe we could have left Iraq last year.

The actions by the President to counter 9/11 have been costly. Many Americans blame Dick Cheney for the shortcomings of the 9/11 response. Some think that he has favored Halliburton and its subsidiaries. Some think that he just wanted to grab Iraq's oil. Some think that the Vice President has a cartel that bypasses the president and constitutional law. Some think he is sneaky, cruel, and dangerous.

Dick Cheney had a wonderful reputation during Bush War I. He has faired less during Bush War II. The People have spoken.

None of this has helped the President.

Another major problem of the President is his Press Secretary. Certainly the most incompetent press secretary in history, Scott McClellan, continues to make the Administration look like a group of unthinking boobs. He lies, dodges, insults, and does everything a press secretary shouldn't do. His treatment of the Press Corp is atrocious. He can't seem to answer the simplest question. Every question causes him to put his hands across his chest. Then he starts to mumble.

Well, Scott doesn't really mumble. I put that in there for effect. Actually, I think it would help if he mumbled. Try that, Scotty.

Because of Scott McClellan, the President and Vice President are always on the road trying to explain what is going on. Unfortunately, they don't always do this in front of a typical American group. When I hear some of the profanity when they do, I don't blame them.

Still, the government is considered unresponsive, out of touch with the American people, and to some, downright evil.

It Will All Come Out in the Wash

Most Americans realize that the President is not trying to become a dictator, that he does not intentionally break laws, that he is completely stupid.

Congress will take action as they always do to relieve major tensions.

But Congress Will Not Change

As congress writes new laws some but not all will continue to add riders creating roads and bridges named after them, slip in a little pork barrel money for their constituents, and take money from special interest groups.

After the President has finished his tenure, some members of Congress will continue to be their own nasty selves.

The two-party system does not seem to work to the advantage of the American People. That was my leadin to the next item.

I'm Against the Two-Party System

The "two-party system" is killing America. The parties are not composed of thinkers. They too often vote as a block. A senator or congressman that votes outside his party will not get that piece of pork he is after.

The other day the Republicans were angry because not one Democrat voted that Judge Alito's nomination be taken to the floor of the Senate. They said that they would remember that in the future. They didn't mention that not one Republican voted against Judge Alito. Nobody said, "Bring back Harriet Miers."

The system doesn't cover Middle America who is neither left nor right.

We need more parties in the United States so that no party can gain a majority without responding to the people.

America has had numerous political parties. Let's resurrect the Federalist, the Whigs, and the Bull Moose parties. I want to be a Mugwump. The Mugwumps bolted the Republican Party in 1884.

We have in the past had senators from these parties: Nullifier, Law & Order, Liberty, Independent Democrat, Free Soil, American, Unionist, Unconditional Unionist, Liberal Republican, Independent Republican, Independent, Readjuster (sounds like a humdinger), Populist, Silver, Populist, Silver Republicans, Progressive, Farmer-Union, and Conservative (see http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/briefing/senators_thirdParties.htm).

Here is my summary from association with our two parties: Each Democrat wants everybody to have a piece of the pie. Each Republican wants the whole pie for himself.

I leaned the difference from actual experience.

Well, let's get things going again. Start your party now.

Here's A Law I Would Like to See

The congress is always pasting their pork to the end of bills.

I would say that no bill should cover more than one subject. If they want pork, put it in its own bill and state which special groups are supporting it.

Why continually try to fool and trick the American People? There should be a law against it. Damn it, do it!

I hope you didn't read this whole article. I'm no expert on these matters.

Sincerely, Taylor Jones, the hack writer.

Hot Air Balloon Rides What Happens?

What to expect on a hot air balloon ride.

Several factors have made hot air ballooning one of the fastest growing adventure ride items and hottest gift tickets around in the last 20 years. With more than 70,000 passengers flown in the UK alone every year.

Sir Richard Branson and his well publicized Atlantic and Pacific crossings and numerous round the world attempts. All kept hot air balloons in the public eye.

The successful round the world flight of Brian Jones and Bertrand Piccard caught the imagination of millions.

Balloon operators in Africa have made magic carpet rides over the Serengeti and Maasi Mara ecosystem possible for many thousands of people.

Perhaps this is why the people of Britain voted hot air ballooning as the number 7 thing to do before you die! A poll that certainly caused an upward blip in the number of passengers flown in the UK.

Modern technology has also made taking a passenger ride in a hot air balloon much safer. Advanced burner designs, giving more powerful flames. Much better pilot lights that keep burning. Baskets especially designed for the carriage of passengers.

Above all modern fabrics that are not only stronger but more able to combat the effects of Ultra Violet Light and mould and mildew. Yes the balloons just like your tent if you get it wet, rots.

At this point I should admit that I am a hot air balloon pilot.

Ballooning has been kind to me and taken me to all points of the globe.

Australia, Thailand, France, England, Kenya and South Africa all balloon flights have similar requirements.

Wherever you are in the world.

I hope to be able to answer some queries and maybe allay some fears in this article. These are the questions I am asked all the time.

Do you have a pilots licence?

Yes balloon pilots have taken written exams just like their fixed wing friends but they have taken the flying test in a balloon instead. In some countries, notably the United Kingdom and Australia there are also fairly strict commercial pilot's licences and annual flying tests to be undertaken. (You've guessed it I have UK and Australian licences) Coupled with this in most countries the balloon company will also have to have an Air Operators Certificate. This or its equivalent is issued by the local aviation authority. An inspector will have checked all the aircraft and pilot paperwork and made sure that the company employs safety systems.

Run a Google check on your particular country and if the person that you ring for a flight cannot assure you that all paperwork is in place don't fly with them.

Better still ring the aviation authority ask for the person responsible for balloons because there will be one.

Ask them if they know of the person you are going to contact for a flight.

You would not believe the number of unlicenced operators there are out there. As a rule of thumb a pilot with 500 flying hours and 5 years of experience should know what he or she is doing.

How many people will be in the balloon?

These days it is unusual to have less than 4 people in a passenger ride balloon. Unless the client has paid a considerable sum of money it does just not make economic sense for the balloon operator.

Probably a good average would be eight passengers.

You will not all be in together. There would probably be five compartments. One in the middle for pilot and gas. Two either side each containing two passengers.

This means in the event of a fast landing you don't all fall on top of each other.

Important to note here that there are no overhead lockers so try and keep luggage to a minimum. A stills and video camera is really all you need. Remember the heavier the basket the shorter time the fuel lasts.

Why so early or late??

Most balloon flights take place first thing in the morning, at or just before sunrise.

This is for the important reason that the air is at its best behaved at that time of day.

It has had a chance to cool down over night and in simple terms get heavy or sticky. Trees, buildings, stuff all help slow down the bottom sticky air and the wind drops.

Hot air balloons do not cope with high speed winds very well.

It's all about the stopping.

At the end of a flight the pilot will pull a line and open a vent in the top of the balloon, this lets air out. But only as fast as it can go through that vent. If its windy the balloon itself or envelope as it should be more correctly called acts like a sail and drags the basket through whatever might be in the way. There are no brakes.

A drag landing is a good time to see why it's a fine idea to make balloon baskets out of wicker. It flexes and gives; a stiffer material would bend or break. I can't count the number of times I have been asked," but why is the basket still wicker". If the passenger ends up having a drag landing they soon realise.

That sticky layer of air is known as the boundary layer, air moving above 2000' is what the pilot is told about by the weather office when he makes his weather check before you fly. This is known as the gradient wind. It will be faster.

They will also tell you the surface wind but the gradient is more accurate. Using the gradient forecast the pilot will have made mentally his best guess as to where you will end up from your take off site.

The pilot will probably release a small helium balloon before your flight and watch it intently. The harder and longer the pilot looks at the thing the trickier the flight will probably be for him or her! If he releases stacks of met balloons then there is a good chance you will be going home.

High speed winds also mean you need longer fields in which to stop. Your pilot will thinking well if we go that way what are the fields like. Maybe there is a large area of forest or water in that direction. It might be possible to fly at higher speeds in certain directions and not in others.

If a balloon pilot cancels a flight because of high speed winds it's not because he got out of bed on the wrong side or that they don't like the look of you.

He or she will have called the flight on because of an earlier forecast and when you get to the flying field you have the play the hand you are actually dealt by Mother Nature.

Balloon pilots usually work on a no flight no fee system so if they cancel not only will they have disappointed you but they won't be getting paid either.

It is always better to go home and try another day. It might be a great shame because today was your birthday or anniversary but it's much better to be able to see the next one.

Telling 16 people to go home is a real character forming exercise for the pilot. Often people will protest and try and get you into the air. My friends and I have a habit of moving those passengers down the wait list!

Back to that sticky air, as it slows down it starts to be influenced! The air over a river is colder still and moves with that river. A wood or dam is cold. You will move with or towards these cool areas and that allows you a little bit of steerage.

The balloon can only fly with the wind, that's it. It's up to the pilot to climb and descend into different layers of air to steer the craft.

When the sun has risen it heats the boundary layer and it rises and mixes with the gradient wind so the balloons track over the ground becomes straighter and faster.

In some parts of the world it is possible to fly in the evening, think of it as the reverse situation. You start off flying a very predictable track and then as the air cools and calms you have a chance to play with direction a little.

If you're in a really cold snowy place you can fly all day.

Should your pilot get airborne and the wind increases in flight he or she should terminate that flight at the first big field they find. Again disappointing but safe.

What Should I Wear?

The heated air in the balloon is at around 100C and you are moving in your own bubble down wind so there is no wind chill. It's pretty warm in the basket. People tend to overdress and regret it. Rather go for layers that can be easily be removed.

If it's a dawn flight on a summer's day it will probably be pretty warm a couple of hours after sunrise.

The biggest apparel mistake that passengers make is in the foot ware department.

Fields are likely to having morning dew on them or something less poetic that a cow has left behind. Welly boots or sturdy boots rule when ballooning.

The colour white is not the best plan either.

How High Will We Fly?

Ballooning is best enjoyed at tree top height. Climbing a little to say 2000' helps the view to unfold and allows the pilot to check what is ahead.

If it's really calm your pilot might go higher still because there is little else to do! I have taken off and landed in the same field before.

How long will the flight last?

Most balloons fly with fuel sufficient for 1 and a half hours' safe flight. Now call me old fashioned call me a fool but it's best to leave some for in case so one hour is generally the time you fly for.

The only time you can have too much fuel is when you are on fire.

Now if a perfect field arrives underneath the balloon at 50 minutes it makes sense to land.

If you fly on because you have passengers insist that they want their hour in the air and hit power lines that's your indaba.

It has happened and aviation authorities take a pretty dim view of pilots that do that sort of thing.

Now if you can remember right back to the beginning when I said the lighter the basket the better the fuel lasts... Well it's very true. Maybe because you didn't bring the kitchen sink with you the pilot is getting good consumption and will take you well over the hour.

Another tip here, if you show interest and seem enthralled every good pilot will try and make the flight last longer. If you are late to the flying site carry the world on board and are rude you might get a short flight. That's life.

How far will we fly?

It's back to the wind speed thing again. Flights in the evening normally go further than the morning.

As a very general rule you fly somewhere in the order of 12km on a flight.

Where will we land?

From even before the pilot takes off he or she should be thinking about the landing. Refining the position continually throughout the flight.

Your landing almost certainly will not be back where you started. It can be sometimes but that's very rare.

It will probably be the aforementioned farmer's field with four legged things in or nearby.

If you happen to be flying with me in Kenya it will be one flipping big field with furry four legged things about.

Sometimes on the edge of built up areas pilots might land on football pitches or school yards. That's perfectly normal.

How will we land?

Just about everybody seems to have seen footage of balloons dragging along the ground on their sides. Now this is normally in Kenya or Tanzania where balloons fly in slightly higher winds than the rest of the world. Because of this basket design has dramatically changed. Big baskets routinely carry 18 passengers. These baskets have cushion flooring, and seats.

For quick landing passengers put their backs to the direction of travel sit on the seats and hold onto rope handles. The balloon sides are high enough that their heads will be below the top of the basket.

It's then just a matter of waiting for the thing to stop. As the balloon slows the basket will tip so the passengers end up on their backs facing skywards normally laughing.

You will have high speed landings in other parts of the world but in my 18 years of flying I have not managed to match East African speeds.

Very important to keep limbs inside the basket whilst dragging, else you'll break them. Also if you have anything around your neck like a camera or binoculars tuck them into your jumper or top to stop them flying up and hitting yourself or friend in the face. Best really to put them in a case by your feet. Anybody with long hair should also be careful not to let it drag under the bottom of the basket.

For the most part it will be a very gentle touchdown, the basket staying upright.

Very important not to get out until the pilot says though. When your weights gone the balloon may take off again and you will be walking home.

How will we get back?

So once on the ground you will probably help the pilot pack the balloon whilst a vehicle that has been in two way radio contact with your pilot finds out how to get into the field.

This may take some time. It's not always obvious to the crew exactly how to get to the balloon.

You will then normally be taken back to the launch site. It's often amazing how long this takes and how far it is. Remember if the balloon you have flown in a fairly straight line across roads and rail.

It might be a torturous windy route back.

That might be why it takes the crew several minutes to find you.

Blimey what started as quick notes seems to have gone on a bit. If you really do have any fears or questions you would like answered. I will try balloonsafaris@hotmail.com

Cheers

Key Signature For Guitar Solo Scales and Patterns

A lot of people have questions about scales and key signatures that usually go something like this,

"How do you recognize a particular key? I understand scales and key signatures, but I suppose you have to develop the ear for what you are listening to. If you hear someone playing the same set of chords-like E, A & D-over again, then you would know that the key was A, and I understand that part, but the difficult thing is recognizing what it is you're listening to... can you do that? When you hear a song, do you immediately know which chords are being played? If so, how do you do it?"

The answer to your question about do I automatically know what chords are playing is, NO.

However, a lot of times I do have a clue on some songs without picking up the guitar and on other songs can find them relatively easy. This is because of experience more than anything.

THEN, there are times even if I have the guitar, it is very difficult to figure out what is being played.

Just so you can do it now, for the beginner, it is usually a hunt and peck method. You will just have to pick a note on YOUR guitar and try to determine the chord on THEIR guitar. If the sound of the note on your guitar sounds higher than what is being played on their guitar, then obviously you will have to go to a lower note. You will need to do this until you find the note that sounds the same.

Many guitarists have worn out their record, 8-track, cassette tape, and now CD going back and forth, back and forth, until they finally get the notes.

To make it easier, I usually listen for the Bass notes played by the Bassist and this will give me a clue as the Bass player USUALLY just follows the root note of the guitar chord. If there isn't a Bass player in the song, then I try and find the lowest note of the chord and adjust from there, since the lowest note is usually the root note. This is not always the case though if the chord is inverted (which means the root note is not the lowest note).

Don't worry, with more practice you will develop a better "ear" for the chords and even notes to a solo and this will become easier.

Now, there is equipment out there that slow the music down to make it easier and you can find a TON of sheet music on the Internet, but why use those crutches at this point? What you really want is to develop your ear and one of the BEST ways to do that is to work through finding the chords and/or notes how I just described.

Until then, it's hunt and peck!

Good luck and HAVE FUN!

My passion is to teach people the quickest and most rapid way to learn how to guitar solo that I know. After years of answering questions from people that are taking mundane guitar lesson, I finally got frustrated with the current method of guitar teaching, which is so boring and takes lesson after lesson to learn how to play guitar, so I decided to write an E-Book - you can get it at: http://www.rpm4guitarsolo.com

I believe that playing the guitar does take practice, but anyone can do it and I want to take the frustration out of learning how, so people don't quit out of frustration and can enjoy the beauty that playing guitar can bring. I hope you enjoy these articles and learn from them.

The First Thing You Must Learn In Your Quest To Make Money Online

Today I am going to address the biggest problem newcomers are encountering in their quest to Work From Home. The problem starts before they even get started, it's called Information Overload. If you are just starting out you need to read this article before you get buried alive in information overload. Believe me it will happen. I am speaking from personal experience.

There are a wide variety of ways to make money online today. Affiliate marketing, create and sell your own product, (i.e. and e-book), selling P.L.R., ( Private Label Rights products), Google AdSense, etc. The list goes on and on. So what happens to many newcomers who don't know how they want to make money online? They begin to search for information on many of these options of how to make money online.

A search on Google or Yahoo! for work from home, or make money online will bring you an unbelievable amount of links to pages telling you how to go about it. Of course just about all the pages that you go to will have some sort of free newsletter offer, or a free report, or free resell rights products that you can get if you will just give them your name and email address. So your average newcomer begins giving their name and email address to receive their information and then the fun begins!

You suddenly have become very popular! Your in-box is filling up daily with emails from all over. Every one has a product or program that they want you to buy and you can't possible live without. So you dash on over to check out someone's site. Suddenly you are sucked in by the brilliant graphics, bold blazing headlines, and unbelievable claims. And if they are good the spiel grabs you, your eyes glaze over, you suddenly see yourself sitting in your hot tub in your new million dollar house, as your butler brings you your martini, as you look out to see your new Hummer sitting out in your driveway next to your black Lamborghini. The next thing you know you are getting out your credit card or logging into your PayPal account to buy their product.

So you have downloaded your new latest and greatest product and you jump right in. After reading through the information for an hour or so you sadly realize your dream of calling your boss tomorrow to say "I QUIT! I've hit the mother lode on the internet", is not going to happen.

So off you go back to sorting through all your emails, (which have been piling up again while you were out getting your last latest and greatest product). Suddenly there's another one! A product that MUST be the one and off you go again, and again, and again. You begin to jump from one program or product to the next. Telling yourself the next one will be it. That one that delivers what they all say, "No work, all automated, just sit back and collect your money".

The next thing you know you have a dozen or so products sitting on your shelves or on your hard drive just waiting for you to" Strike it Rich". Listen, it's not going to happen like that. Whether you choose Affiliate Marketing, eBay, sell your own e-book, M.L.M., Network Marketing, whatever it is, it's going to take some work and it's not going to happen overnight.

Do your research, find out how to become an eBay God, or an Affiliate Marketing Madman. Find out exactly what's going to be involved in whichever one appeals to you. Then pick one and stay focused on it! Don't get lured away by some other programs or products. Stick with one and make it work. Then you can branch off into other venues.

And do yourself a favor. Get another email account from Yahoo!, Hotmail, Google, or Gmail, anywhere - Use that email address as you begin to sign up for all those reports and newsletters, and product downloads and whatever else you need in your research in deciding how you want to make money in your quest to work from home.

It is possible to make money from home on the web. In between all the scams and hype and bs there are legitimate products and programs that will help you on your way. Many people are out there doing it. You can be one of them. Just be realistic. Don't expect miracles. And with some work and research and dedication you to can be one of them!

What Makes a Great TV Talk Show Host?

It looks so easy. Can't anybody fool around for an hour chatting with celebrities? If you get a hot celebrity like our neighbor north of here, Bruce Willis, he takes over the show and you can sit back and enjoy. That should be easy.

The other night Bruce Willis came on Letterman and I could hardly wait for him to get out there. At first, I couldn't see what his joke was going to be. Then he turned his head. The right side of his face was plastered with buckshot.

Not too long ago, he came on Letterman in a green suit. I don't remember why. I just know it was funny and I expect fun from Bruce Willis when he appears on a show. I can't imagine what it would be like if he showed up on the Daily Show. He and Jon Stewart would blow our minds, wouldn't they?

Last night Leno had a sexy actress on the show. She is single and prefers dogs to men. She has six dogs as I remember and she travels with four of them. People are interested in dogs so her appearance was a success. (Not!) The actress had large mammary glands and they were somewhat exposed.

Normally, Jay would spend a good deal of time about how sexy his guest looks, but the young actress was too sexy and nothing had to be said about her appearance.

By ignoring the sex topic other than a casual comment that his wife was watching, Jay had a better interview than he usually does because he talked about the actress's interest and not his interest.

The interview was about the same as the last time this beauty came on his show, but nobody seemed to care. They were there for the view.

The interviews on talk shows are not enough to maintain interest. Often those interviewed are brainless twits and as boring as dairy mud. Paris Hilton came on the Letterman show and couldn't give an answer to the simplest question. She had nothing to say and that is what she said.

Other activities have to be included.

The audience want some structure in the show that allows surprise. Without that, the show is dead.

Did you see Oprah give away the cars?

That was a media event.

Did you see Letterman walk Oprah, arm in arm, across the street to the theater?

Did you see Letterman's crew drop watermelons off the Sullivan Theater Building to the street below?

And that is the point of this article.

The job of the host of a talk show is to make sure that the audience is continually entertained.

Leno is a standup comedian and he therefore uses that as his forte. Letterman is a clown, and downplays that part of the show. When I say "downplay" I mean he keeps his monologue short.

Helen Degeneres likes to dance on her show. Her dancing is awful and I always hit the channel button when she does it.

Some gimmicks don't work for bearded old men.

If I were to ask you how Leno and Letterman compare with Johnny Carson, you would probably say that there is no comparison.

Carson was the master of the monologue (and the skit) as was Jack Benny and Bob Hope and Rodney Dangerfield and ten other comedians you know. So the monologue isn't everything.

Letterman generally does a better job of interviewing then Leno, but neither compare with Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jon Steward, or Fred Allen.

They get by.

Leno likes to make fun of people and things.

He does not see irony like a comedian like Jerry Seinfeld but he sees the obvious.

He likes to go out on the street and interview the flotsam and jetsam that flows along. He is sexually minded and usually is looking for something sexy about every female that walks down the street (and who joins him in celebrity chit chat.) Letterman is a lady sniffer too but to a much less degree than Leno. Leno looks for lechery in the men.

Last night Leno was asking the audience to guess if street people had a tattoo. The audience was very good at this. Everybody had a tattoo but one and they guessed that too.

This type of antic is good because it brings the audience into the program. They are taking part. He does the same thing when asking the audience if a particular weird item sold on EBay.

Letterman uses sideshow tactics to get a laugh. His skit Will it Float is a contest between him and Paul. The audience is not directly participating but each person in the audience forms an opinion. So he gets the same effect.

What do the girl with the rings and the girl with the grinder and the two stand-around girls have to do with this act? Everything! Every picture needs a frame.

The most important factor for a person that has to stand in front of a television audience night after night or day after day is to develop a continuing relationship with each member of the audience. This is not an easy thing to do for some people.

Letterman is not a personal kind of guy. He keeps things close to his chest.

Leno is somewhat this way, but Leno has a warm personality, almost loving, and people relate to him.

Watch Leno with animals versus Letterman.

Letterman wonders if the animal is going to pee on him.

Leno holds the animal close and loves it. That transfers to the audience.

Oprah is a monumental warmth bunny. Everybody loves her and wants to get closer too her. (That must make her life hell.)

Leno is going to be replaced by Conan O'Brian is a few years. Conan lacks now what is needed to succeed in that role. He is mainly a clown and probably doesn't have a serious bone in his body. He likes the skit. After a while his tactics can become tedious. But the host is not the whole show. Conan should do well because he is well know, will be more seasoned, and will have good writers and show directors that will get the show into a successful format. Those writers and directors should start practicing now.

Jon Stewart is hosting the Oscars this year.

Letterman completely bombed out on that assignment. He made an absolute ass of himself and he still regrets it.

Jon Stewart will be a big success if he doesn't get too vulgar. I think he will entertain the actors more than the television audience. That is a risk he has to take.

Success on the Oscar show will probably bring Jon greater opportunities than what is offered on Comedy Channel.

Watch out Letterman and Leno!

The Learning Tennis Guide Part 1

To readers of this tennis guide, here is a little background information about yours truly.

I have been playing tennis for a long time, and have become fairly competitive.

In the beginning, I taught myself how to play, but I skipped out on researching techniques and play-styles. This was a big mistake!

In my third tournament I sprained my wrist, it was a grade 3 sprain, ouch!

The doctors told me it was because the ligaments were stretched beyond their normal limits; Upon further research I found out that these ligaments are quite tough.

So why did I really sprain my wrist?

I must have been swinging around my racquet really hard? Wrong! It is not about power, its about technique.

My technique was filled with bad form because I started playing without the knowledge needed to develop a good form. I purchased a guide online (links in my squidoo web page if your interested) and it helped me a lot. You do not understand, I had used bad form for so long I couldn't break the habit. I could never put a price on how much that guide helped me, it turned me into a new player.

In this tennis guide I'll teach you some basics about tennis that will help get you started.

This is crucial, you should be doing this every time your opponent hits the ball. It is called split-step and it is a technique that balances your weight correctly so you can move in any direction easily and quickly. Jump off the ground ever-so-slightly and land on the balls of your feet. This centers your weight.

You should also have a 'ready' position, which you should be in every time your not moving on the court. Stand with your feet about hip-width apart, and you should hold the racquet right in front of you.

Here is a great drill that will improve your volley aim and reaction time, two of the most important aspects of tennis!! Stand on the T section between the two services boxes with your back to the net. Have a partner volley it to you, and yell hit it. When he does you spin around and volley it right back to him as best you can.

You need to be able to react like lightning! Practice that drill every day and you could be quicker than John McEnroe!!!

Tennis racquets call for a whole tennis guide, which I'll probably write up as a follow-up article, but here goes. The size of the racquet is mostly personal preference. Large racquets have a bigger sweet spot, so more power! Yet the downfall is that they are slower than smaller racquets. Smaller racquets are much lighter. I won't interfere with your decision by telling you my personal opinion.

What would you suggest personally? I really really really want to know?

Do not read this paragraph. I would stick with a larger racquet as I believe that it helps breed good form in beginners. Larger racquets pretty much force you to develop long and proper strokes. A decent racquet will cost you $80-$90, and a professional racquet alot more.

A great option when choosing a racquet is to demo it first. You can find demo's online or at your local tennis shop.

I will write more tennis guide articles like this if the feedback is positive. Also check out my squidoo lens in my bio for more great tips!
